I think magazines are a great tool for discovering your personal style. When renovating consider collecting a variety of decorating magazines and spend some time book marking your favourite rooms or objects in the magazine. Make yourself familiar with the different styles like Traditional or Contemporary or Contemporary Country, Modern and even Eclectic styles.
To see what your personal style is just compare all of your marked favourites and see if you notice any repetition. Look at the colours in the rooms, materials used or shapes of the items. I find most people are surprised with how similar their selections really are. By using these pictures as your guide you’ll soon see you have a design style after all! You still might not be able to name your style, but knowing that you like straight lined furniture, natural materials and certain colors you will be able to choose with confidence. You’ll either like lots of colour or very little colour and be drawn to certain patterns. Knowing just a little about yourself is a great place to start.
Caution when choosing paint colors though, I always seek out professional help with this because colour selection is the most important part of decorating and it’s the base for going forward with your style. We have Dianne Jansen on our staff she is our custom in-home painter. She is Benjamin Moore trained, and I love just her paint choices. A in-home paint consultation begins at about $75.00 but well worth it in the end. Dianne can also help pick your new window coverings to match you new style.
